Walmart Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products

In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video received widespread backlash for permitting the large-scale transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, because the restriction is tied to each visit, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, this approach might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.

Some resellers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.

Looking Ahead

The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.

Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
