The megacity Awakens to Toxic Pollution After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Various sections of the capital recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to ten times the recommended threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times above safe levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as winter begins.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Court Decision and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many recording stations throughout the capital showed contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the environment has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Various Pollution Factors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in adjacent areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple studies.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k premature fatalities per year in the city.
