The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
