The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
