Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Series on BBC

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure will return their roles in the popular crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
